With openSUSE that Donn is using /usr/lib is for 32-bit and /usr/lib64
is for 64-bit.
slipstream:/usr/src# ls -ld /usr/lib*
drwxr-xr-x 146 root root  45056 Apr 23 21:08 /usr/lib/
drwxr-xr-x 214 root root 147456 Apr 23 21:09 /usr/lib64/

The different distributions do their own thing and often don't strictly
adhere to the LSB. Ubuntu has
root@sdrbox1:~# ls -ld /usr/lib*
drwxr-xr-x 231 root root  90112 2011-04-22 01:35 /usr/lib
drwxr-xr-x  49 root root 135168 2011-04-22 01:34 /usr/lib32
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root root      3 2011-04-08 12:24 /usr/lib64 -> lib
