as an amd/ati user, i got those messages when i mess my card driver and linux (debian SID here) start with the basic driver for the card.

I can't tell if it happens with the "radeon" driver or an other, but in this case "glxinfo" give very short information, telling me that i don't have 3D accel IIRC .

depending your graphic card, you can try the fglrx closed source driver, or fglrx-legacy (for card before hd5XXX, the support for hd4XXX and below dropped in the fglrx driver some months ago).
