Yes - I think that STR is part of it (and I think, but am not certain)
that the proposed fix is correct.

However, Evan's other problem is that the OSX text rendering is slow now
under 1.3 because of other changes to implement UTF8.

Yup.
It's the old Nedit text engine.
It is quite complex.
