I assume you are using FLTK 1.3 ? Earlier versions do not support Unicode. Also 
make sure that your text is entered in a UTF-8 capable editor.

It's always helpful to mention you FLTK version and your operating system in 
your posts!

The Symbol font does normally not contain text characters, but only graphics 
characters. So even English text should not show correctly. Use one of the 
other standard fonts and make sure that your computer provides these particular 
characters.
