Re: Greg's suggestion of a stand-alone chooser; ISTR that some tool (maybe LVE or something that no longer exists...) did exactly that, and I cobbled together a basic chooser that used fltk for my system, since the default source code that distributed with it used some GUI toolkit that I did not have on that machine... So, anyway, it is a well established idea, and maybe something to consider...
