What you are doing ought to work, so if it does not, switching to Linux probably isn't going to make any difference. It certainly should *not* make a difference - we are supposed to be cross-platform! Running gcc from an Msys shell on winXX is, for all practical purposes, the same as running under *nix for the things you are doing, so if that is not working for you, then...
