In this case, I'd say yes (I may well be wrong, of course!) Two reasons why this is a useful complexity: 1) It makes the compatibility layer more feasible. 2) It may make it easier to write bindings for other languages to use the fltk libs. Both of these seem like valuable additions to me, and worth the extra complexity. YMMV...
