What do you mean by "when performing the mapping"? Have you exported the mapping and seen that it's 255, or are you generating your schema from the mappings? If it's the latter, it's probably a quirk with the schema generation and/or database dialect you're using rather than a mapping issue.
As for the type, there's a Type method, though I'm not certain if it will work as you need. We probably need to support the sql-type attribute here.
