These are some great thoughts, Eli - they do help clarify (muddy? :-)  
my understanding of the factors involved.

It sounds like a lot of things are in the hands of the back-end  
developer, and not in our hands. We will need to document clearly what  
the back-end needs to do, provide, etc., along with any best-practice  
suggestions.
