Jonathan raises an important point. On a main page it's best not to require scrolling, since most people won't bother. If there has to be scrolling, there will need to be some kind of visual link between the visible content and the content below the fold to encourage people to look further.

On my laptop, it's even worse, I don't see the bottom icons at all!
With the Firefox bookmark toolbar, webdev toolbar, and menus, I lose
about 200 pixels.

Ah, I agree. It looks fine on my nice large monitor at work, but here at
home, on my 14" 1024x768 laptop screen, not so good: see attached image.

I think I need to edit the text in the middle and that will buy us some
space in the middle of the page.
That would probably help!
