There are some issues with the blog post you quoted, from an Inclusive Design
perspective.

To start with, the author dismisses the idea of a code of conduct as 'political
correctness’. This is very disturbing because when you break it down, it seems
like it is saying that ‘there are things I do and say that upset other people
and make them feel unwelcome and I want to continue doing and saying them'.

The author has highlighted some aspects of the github code of conduct and I
feel these highlights are not in line with our community. By highlighting
technical ability, they are saying that we value people *because* of their
technical ability. The Fluid community has always been about valuing diverse
contributions - designs, ideas, various forms of resources and also code.
Quoting from an interesting article about meritocracy as it exists in many open
source communities:
"even if the myth of equal access and opportunity were true, is it really
enough to be measured by the quality of our code alone?”

<https://modelviewculture.com/pieces/the-dehumanizing-myth-of-the-meritocracy>

By highlighting jokes and language the author is saying that these are not
hurtful or powerful things. On the contrary, jokes are often the cause of
silencing and excluding the most vulnerable.

The author goes on to talk about the ‘intent’ behind a statement. Personally, I
don’t think a code of conduct assumes intent but rather asserts an expectation
of behaviour that promotes inclusion of those who are often excluded. Intention
is perhaps not that relevant, but rather action that we care about.

I just want to reiterate that our community already exhibits all the values
described in the various codes of conduct. I feel that all we are doing here is
communicating how we already behave.

Thanks,

Michelle
