The legacy thrift source should work for writing from a client using the thrift
schema used for Flume 0.9.
Having a custom downstream thrift server that wants a specific schema sounds
like a fine thing to write your own custom sink for. That doesn't sound like
something that makes sense in the core to me (although I am open to being
convinced).
Another drawback to Thrift is that they are not great about providing backwards
compatibility, and it's a build-time dependency that exists outside of Maven.
