There is a somewhat famous NY artist On Kawara whose work is built around
archiving everyday activities. His best known body of work is a series of
uniform black paintings with the date in white block letters that he has
been doing since the seventies. He also does things like sends people
postcards and telgrams saying, "I am alive" or "I woke up at 7:35 AM
12/19/89" and, if I remember correctly, keeps an archive of maps of
Manhattan where he traces a route of the places he went and the people he
met.
There was an excellent article on him in the UK art mag Frieze from 1997.
He's a fascinating artist definitely worth researching.
