There is no control like that via the mics, however my portable recorder,
a Sony MZ-R37, came with a small remote control device which connects into
the headphone jack.  I then connect my headphones into the remote.
With this you can literally keep the recorder housed in a Case Logic
pouch on your belt and still access all of the functions you need such
as volume, start, stop, pause, etc.
