thanks for the advice.
all is ok. after several attempts i got to C: prompt, typed bootfix and hey
presto!
nothing happened...
until i rebooted when, after a short chkdsk thingy all appears to be swell.
BTW anyone know how to get a roland pc180a midi controler to work on winxp with
a soundblaster awe64?
