no, i tend not to differentiate btwn the 2. thats being said, you are accurate in the fact i am sampling snippets of pasing conversation. i work with lots of found paper and now im thinking of  my actual use w/ the  detritus of paper as sampling. i think sampling originated as an engineering term in measuring levels of oil. of course hip hop artists maximized the practice to mass consciousness. i always seen hip hop/rap as collaged sound.
as for recording the passing fragments of conversation my intent was to give a randomed / collaged summary of what is current in the ubiquitous urban exchange of information from low to high brow all inclusive, all demographs, any setting. zeitgeist (trademark)? maybe there is some marxist underpinning here.

referencing is one thing, putting into practice of what is being referred to is another...thats recycling. appropriation can applied as well. as for the baggage w/ certain terms i tend to not want to spend too much time in postmodern semantics....any event that occurs thru usage of media is up for grabs for "recycling," appropriation. but if i see a color of a decaying building and go into the studio and paint it somewhere, is that sampling.?

Like, would you differentiate sampling from collage in ways other than the media that each is usually associated with? Collage is generally thought of as referring to visual media, while sampling is usually thought of as applying to audio, but video looping is sometimes referred to as either collage or sampling. One might consider it all as ‘referencing’ but that term seems inadequate to me. Recycling comes to mind as well, but that term also carries a lot of baggage with it.

absolutley....

i wasnt thinking of the sampling thing per-se..but more of the collaged element of  snippets of information juxtaposed in random relationships which may evoke new associations and possible meanings which could be used as a working process in the spirit of scrambling codes of specific paradigms; if that makes sense. i think i got the idea from apollinaire...

its an account of public discourse.

I am very fond of creative/different uses of ‘sampling’. It has become a big part of the popular culture today in the music scene, but samples can be just as interesting when used as the brush strokes of literature, visual art, multimedia, and especially intermedia.

hey all,

this is an experiment w observing ear snippets of passing conversation while walking on the streets of princeton, nj and philadelphia, pa this past month; all recorded on a hand-held mini-cassette.

-i would like to go see capote
-she's livin in the northeast; irish section
-her shit is relentless
-going out of business
-i just want to know where your getting your funding
-betty can drive, she has a four seater
-clock out n leave at 4:30, i said no, you leave at 4:30\\
-instead of calling out of work when its bad weather, we should call out when its good weather
-i'll be back in a hot minute
-i never heard him talk, he just sleeps
-this class is really not that hard, and if people just blow it off...
-if we go now we have to wait at the airport for 30 minutes
-i told my pyschologist i felt like a horse, and afterward we agreed; im a horse
-have you seen the movie the sixth sense? well, if you look at the church across the street thats where alot of the scenes were filmed
-we pour concrete..
-as long as it is kosher
-my aunt use to serve chicken
-bring that goddamn chair
-go to hell
-can i get a corned beef sandwich
-there cut out in little circles

this was fun
