Hi Dave,
There are a small bug in build-extruded-type.
It doesn't handle non ascii characters, but internals which are used
by this function, could handle utf, but you pass only ascii char to
it.
I've attached the test case (it should display some japanese and russian text),
and patch which demonstrate fix.
It is not a solution, rather an example how it should work.
I've used parts of libcaca for fix.
