As a possible 2nd best solution you could use conditional formatting
to highlight data that is invalid; also perhaps a calculated tooltip
that tells the user what the problem is

Also, whatever happened to being able to attach scripts to entering
and exiting fields? I thought we were supposed to get that with 8.5
