Help! My normal internet connexion is dial-up, but while I was on a broadband WiFi hotspot earlier today, I did a software update. For today the log shows:

2008-08-26 12:24:55 +0100: Installed "iLife Support" (8.3)
2008-08-26 12:29:04 +0100: Installed "Security Update 2008-005 (PowerPC)" (1.0)

Ever since then I can't launch FMP9A. It shows the splash screen, then up comes a FileMaker dialogue box saying "Some of the files that are needed are either damaged or have not been correctly installed. Please run the installer to correct this problem."

So, I ran the installer and after installation was complete I tried launching the application again, with the same result. I also tried running the v3 updater (my disc is v1) before trying to launch FMP, without any difference in behaviour (ie the updater works apparently happily, but the application still won't launch afterwards).

Next I tried booting from an external hard disc (a SuperDuper "sandbox" volume) that has not (yet!) had the same software update applied and FMP9A launches OK while running that system (both from the internal HD copy of FMP9A and from another in the sandbox).

When booted from the updated system, I can run FMP8A (so at least I can get some work done on files that don't rely on FMP9 features) but not FMP9A.

There doesn't seem to be any "uninstall" mechanism for Software Update. I guess the safest recovery would be to restore last night's backup of the internal disc, all except the Users folder as I have done some other work today - unless anyone has a better idea!

Has anyone else had a similar symptom?

Environment:
PowerBook G4 1GHz, 1GB RAM
Mac OS 10.4.11

regards

Rowland
