I was not particularly worried about search time. Large files when
worked hard can become corrupted. Searching in the text file keeps
all actions away from the photo file. It just sits there and serves
photos. For what you are describing probably not a big deal. Add a
bunch of scripts and reports and some special processing and then you
have a recipe for problems.

I just tested an exercise where I created a filemaker file that just
imported the file name and photo as a reference from the original
folder containing all the photos. There are 5000 photos of various
file size and the search by key words seems almost instant. As I
said there is no backing up required for this solution.
I'll have to test it with larger file sized photos to see if it
affects the search time
