FileMaker can connect to any ODBC datasource for which there is a driver 
availiable. You can import data from the ODBC data source into FileMaker but 
cannot modify* the data in the source itself with ODBC. ODBC must be setup on 
each user machine individually. *Modifying the parent data source requires use 
the Execute SQL script step--which may be difficult to implement.

ESS currently works with a couple flavors of Oracle, MySql and Sequel Server, 
permitting two-way linking much like that between tables inside filemaker. It 
only needs to be setup one time on the FM Server itself. FileMaker website has 
information about which versions are supported.
