Mr Knight.
I am based in the UK and dental surgeons tend to be very discreet in their
advertising. It all rather depends on wha are it is that you are seeking to
commercialise. If you are of the drill and fill school, then target your
surgery to that clientele. You may have an interest in maxilo-facial
re-construction following accident, and that is another specialisation.
What about cosmetic surgery?
My suggestion is to never neglect your core dental surgery but use that to
expand the specialisation that interests you so that you become an expert in
a field and accepting of referral. Use your patient list to expand your
practice perhaps through seeking to become a little "personal" with your
patients. For instance, if they play tennis, join their club (provided that
they are categorised into the type and niche that you wish to be associated
with. Similarly, if they play golf, whatever.
I know just 3 dental surgeons; first as a result of fly fishing, a second as
a student that I trained with for a few years when we were in the same
karate association and the third because I took the trouble to try and
canvas a friendship by being interested in their career having moved to a
new town.
You need to know what it is that you want to achieve from any promotional
campaign, which I suggest should be created by a professional agency to
represent you. You at the end of the day (or rather your target audience)
will need to decide that the content exhibited or published accurately
represents what is of interest to them to fulfil and ultimately become the
stick that either supports or thrashes you.
Good luck in your article. I am sorry if this seems a little patronising.

Subject: [OT] Survey to Help Market your FileMaker Business
I apologize for the Off topic post, but I am writing an article for a
Dental
magazine and for our newsletter and I want to get as many legitimate
responses to the survey as I can.
The survey is only 6 questions, and it focuses on the effectiveness of
traditional advertising. I don't want to affect the way any of you answer
the survey questions - so I will just say - traditional advertising is:
* Newspaper, Radio, TV, any type of print media, Yellow Pages
Please take 5 minutes to respond to the survey and I will post all of the
results in our next newsletter!
