Just wanted to thank Craig and others who suggested the problem it
might be a font issue.
That was indeed the problem.
Lest anyone else have the same problem, here was the solution:
Delete the fonts that were not showing up. In our case, Arial...all
types... and Courier.
Start machine from an OSX Disk and run Disk Utility Repair Permissions.
Reinstall Fonts.

We have this happening on 2 Mac laptops. Same permissions on other
machines, no problems. Different permissions on the problem
machines, same issue. So it is not permissions related.
Clearly it is something to do with software conflicts or settings
on the two machines. One was working fine with FMpro up until
today--apparently there were some printer software updates in the
interim between when it worked and present--suggesting those might
be the problem. The other had not been in use for Filemaker prior
to report of this problem.
Just wondering if anyone else may have encountered (and solved?)
similar problems.
