Using FileMaker 12

I have a table called "globals" which has no records and a bunch of global
fields.

The user is on a layout in the parent table.

To allow a user to edit portal records I have them click a button which sets a
key field in the globals table with the ID of the row they've selected.

Then a relationship from the globals table to the portal child table shows them
the selected records in related fields. All on the original layout.

My question:

in a hosted multi-user environment, will this cause record locking? Will both
the parent record and the selected child record be locked?

Or will only the selected child record be locked?

I know that :

1. When a user clicks into a portal row, the parent and child records are
locked.

2. If the user clicks one of the portal scroll arrows, the parent and the first
child record in the portal are locked

3. If a user locks the first record in the portal and another user has that
same first record, then the portal is locked from the second user.

BUT since the relationship that's showing them the "child" related fields is
from a table (globals) other than the table with the layout the user is on, is
#1 happening?

Or, is this a way to get around record locking.

Thanks in advance.
