(For anyone else with this problem)
Got it working - this is what I had to do to the client's html code:
1. in the top:
data:text/html,<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
<title>Highcharts Example</title>
(Previously had no <!DOCTYPE HTML> or <meta http-equiv="Content-Type"
content="text/html; charset=utf-8">)
2. use a script and set the web viewer with the contents of a global field;
could not get it to work if I a) tried to use a calc field OR b) tried to use a
custom web address in the web viewer itself b/c too many characters in the html
If I tried to paste the html into the webviewer as a custom web address the
text got cutoff. And a calc field gave me a "length of the selected text
cannot exceed 30000 character(s)" error.
