I’m trying to script the sending of a batch of e-mail messages from a FMP
membership database. I am doing this on behalf of the membership secretary so I
do not want replies coming back to me. I can make it work on test OK if I use
my e-mail client and personal e-mail account as the sender, but in practice I
want to send the message using another gmail account. The idea is to make it
clear that the message comes from the organisation rather than from me
personally, and thus ensure that replies are correctly routed.

I have tried to set up gmail following advice in their help pages and
elsewhere, but all the combinations of things I have tried give me a message
“Unable to log in to the SMTP server”.

The account I am planning to use normally has POP & IMAP turned off, because all
incoming messages are forwarded to a Google Group which acts as a collaborative inbox
and so the committee do not need to look at the ordinary gmail account in the normal
course of events. So I turned POP on so that the SMTP server would work, and have tried
both SSL & TLS in the FMP SMTP setup dialogue.

I’m using FMP 19.6.3, running Mac OS 12.7.1 on a Mac Mini M1.

Does anyone have a recipe for success in this endeavour?

in friendship

Rowland
