Hi,
We are having problems running MOM4 on a SMP Linux cluster. The problem
surfaces when we use MPICH-1.2.5 configured with "--comm=shared", i.e. with the SMP support enabled.

A runtime error occurs and the model exits.

The error is:-
        p0_3990: p4_error: exceeding max num of P4_MAX_SYSV_SHMIDS: 256

When we compile and run MOM4 with a version of MPICH
that does not have the SMP support enabled (MPICH-1.2.4), everything runs smoothly.

The reason we are using the shared memory is option for running other models (such as the PSU/NCAR MM5, which seems quite happy to run with the SMP enabled MPICH).

We are curious to know if this is a result of the "distributed memory paradigm" in and if SMP is not allowed (see http://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/~smg/MOM/web/guide_parent/s3node23.html), or
if this is just some glitch.

In short: is this a feature or a bug?

Sincerely,
Halldor
