PostDoc in Ocean Modelling / Data Assimilation

CSIRO Marine Research (CMR) is seeking to appoint a young scientist with
a background in ocean modeling and/or data assimilation, subject to
confirmation of funding. The research will be expected to contribute to
the design of improved data assimilation tools in ocean circulation
models.

The position will be part of the Marine Environmental Variability and
Prediction (MEVP) research group at CMR. The successful candidate will
be based in Hobart, Australia, and will join a team of researchers from
CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM). There will be ample
opportunity for the successful candidate to travel in order to
collaborate with US-based researchers who are experts in the field of
data assimilation.

Applicants should have a PhD in oceanography, mathematics, computer
science or a related field and have experience in numerical modelling.
Experience in data assimilation and/or observation-based oceanography
would be an advantage.

The appointment is due to start in January 2004 and lasts 3 years
(subject to satisfactory performance at the end of each year). Salary
will be competitive. The position will be formally advertised soon, but
interested candidates are encouraged to contact Peter Oke
