Hi,

Apologies for using this as a classifieds page, but here is a position that we really wish to fill soon!

Thanks,
Steve

=======================================================================

NOAA/GFDL Term Research Positions in Physical Oceanography: NOAA/GFDL has
immediate openings for a full-time research scientist and a postdoctoral
research scientist to participate in two Ocean Climate Processes Teams.
The scientists will work to understand specific physical oceanic processes
and to develop, implement, and test improved representations of these in
GFDL's ocean models. The incumbents will lead or assist in writing
peer-reviewed papers documenting this work.

The Ocean Climate Process Teams support collaborations between the
nations' premier climate modeling centers and theoreticians,
observationalists, and process modelers in the academic oceanographic
community to improve the physical realism of selected processes in the
ocean components of climate models. One team will examine eddy-mixed layer
interactions and the other gravity current entrainment. The research
positions are to collaborate with both of these teams.

Eddy-mixed layer interactions are important because of their role in
restratifying the surface mixed layer. GFDL will be using eddy-resolving
hydrostatic simulations to examine the interactions and to develop and
test parameterizations suitable for use in climate models.

Gravity current entrainment is essential for the formation of watermasses
from marginal sea inputs. GFDL will be developing frameworks suitable for
use in Z-coordinate models and evaluating entrainment parameterizations
for use in both Z- and isopycnic-coordinate models.

A Ph.D. in physical oceanography or a closely related discipline or
equivalent experience is required. Numerical fluid modeling experience,
especially in parameterization development, is strongly desired, although
experience in the analysis of observational data may provide a suitable
background. Programming proficiency is required. The facets of this
position as a liaison with our external collaborators demand strong
written and spoken communication skills.

These positions are full-time and may be either a university postdoctoral
scientist appointment or a federal term appointment with the U.S. Dept of
Commerce/NOAA, GFDL, Plainsboro, NJ at the GS-11/12 level, plus benefits. The appointments will be for the 3-year term of the funded CPT proposals,
assuming satisfactory progress. The starting salary range is
$45,000-$61,000, depending on experience. The Department of Commerce is
an equal opportunity employer and does not condone or tolerate
discrimination based on race, color, religion sex, national origin, age,
physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation. For more
information, visit http://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/gfdl_vacancies.html.

Interested persons should submit their curriculum vita to Kim Stockton via
e-mail at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; via facsimile at: (609) 987-6507,
or via regular mail at: GFDL, Princeton University, Box 308, Princeton,
NJ, 08542-0308. CVs will be accepted through October 10, 2003 or until
suitable candidates are identified. After that time, a decision will be
made on how to proceed with the hiring process, and a formal job ad may
ensue. All applicants that submit a CV will be notified of additional
application procedures. Further information about the scientific nature of
the work is available from Robert Hallberg at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or Geoff
Vallis at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
