No...I just had a bad experience with SourceFire both in terms of reliability and as a reseller. I was merely offering anecdotal experience (which has marginal value). As you can see from other posts, another person had a lot of problems with TippingPoint - which I have not seen. I also know people who loathe ISS and Juniper because of hardware problems. Every dog has a bad day.
And you are correct - a 75% failure rate would doom a company. But, I've seen companies with horrible failure rates keep on chugging along. Heck, I know companies that are absolute scum-of-the-earth evil, but they keep suckering morons into buying stuff. So, an inability to execute (or making a pact with Satan) isn't always a death nail for companies. To be honest, my ire with SourceFire is for more mundane reasons. We were one of the first resellers in this area for SourceFire. And we had some serious problems working with the company. I won't go into details in this forum because its inappropriate. But, it was bad. And we don't sell SourceFire any more. So, my opinions are obviously clouded by that (bad) experience. And its only fair to disclose that. That doesn't mean SourceFire is bad and evil and nobody should buy it. The latest test validate what most of us know for IPS. The top 4 products are ISS, Juniper, TippingPoint, and SourceFire. I think that is probably right. _____________________________________ Andrew Plato, CISSP, CISM President/Principal Consultant ANITIAN ENTERPRISE SECURITY Your Expert Partner for Security & Networking 3800 SW Cedar Hills Blvd, Suite 280 Beaverton, OR 97005 503-644-5656 Office 503-214-8069 Fax 503-201-0821 Mobile www.anitian.com _____________________________________ GPG public key available at: http://www.anitian.com/corp/keys.htm -----Original Message----- From: Martin Roesch [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, February 16, 2006 7:47 AM To: Andrew Plato Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [email protected] Subject: Re: IPS Reliability/Availability -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 So Andrew, are you saying that most of our customers routinely experience 75% hardware failure rates and we're somehow managing to cover this up or do you think this was an isolated incident? Can you imagine the cost to us in in terms of overhead for our customers with 100+ sensors if that were a true indication of the reliability of our gear? BTW, our IPS appliances offer zero power fail-open NICs as well. -Marty _________________________________________________ NOTICE: This email may contain confidential information, and is for the sole use of the intended recipient.
