James Your assertions are not all together wrong. IDS/IPS can be a lot to manage no matter the upfront costs. This is exactly what we tried to take on with our freeware product Strata Guard Free which we think is very easy to manage and is of course free. You can read more about it at http://www.stillsecure.org. Of course many of the larger players have come out with less expensive versions of their products including ISS and Tipping Point. I don't know if they are any easier to use though. Really not familiar with the Symantec box but they are not known for ease of use. Hope that helps
