Why not create a Linux VM, and install Nessus. You can then check the
patch level with the proper credentials.
You can also use OpenBSD. Here is a link to an appliance running OBSD
4.2 with VMWare Tools installed. Nessus is a part of the ports
collection for OpenBSD. http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/1075
You can then get a free plugin subscription from tenable.
