One thing to note, if you would rather not get into the hassle of having to maintain the IDS yourself, Secureworks (http://www.secureworks.com) has a pretty nice IDS that runs Snort and iptables and is managed by the company itself. It's full featured and easy enough for most anyone to administrate.
