I know two outfits that use the free forwarding services of iname.com, one is
Bairnet and the other is h.o.m.e. We chose the free forwarding addresses,
instead of paying for a fancier name. Even the free one has an option for
forwarding or storing the mail for web access. Even though the company changed
hands, they have honored the 'lifetime free e-mail address' so far. They did
drop the SMTP service, which we didn't really use anyway, since that was what
stuck their ad at the end of the messages. h.o.m.e. has gone through several
ISPs, but still kept it's [EMAIL PROTECTED] address. (earthling.net was
one of the free names available at the time.)
On the road a few times, I was glad to have a free web-mail account that had
the option of reading any POP mail account you wanted to access. That was very
convenient for reading mail without storing it on the local computer. Plus, the
web-based POP access lets you automatically read from a list of e-mail accounts
into one Inbox.
There are some free URL pointers, but the only one I have tried
(go.to/yourname, or come.to/etc.) puts your web page inside it's ad frame, which
is a nuisance, and some users may not know they can 'open frame in new window.'
I found it not worth it, so I have not advertised it. I set it up the Stockton
Historical society page on BariNet, since the address is long. The idea of a
simple come.to/sshs sounded good, but the ads made it to cumbersome.
