I solved it by "make clean; make" - would there have been a less intrusive way to deal with it?
Not really. Alluding to Alejandro's comment, the rules of physics changed and you had to rebuild your universe starting from the big bang. The deficiency is in the Makefiles that should detect the need to run the 'make clean' on your behalf. I might take a look at that later today since it sometimes annoys the cr*p out of me too. :)
