The DejaVu font family is derived from the Bitstream Vera font family under a BSD-like free license, with additional "Arev" glyphs also under a BSD- like free license. The terms are here: http://dejavu-fonts.org/wiki/index.php?title=License I am not a lawyer, but I would feel comfortable using fonts under these licenses with attribution and without permission. I did so with my own Toga font family, itself based on Bitstream Vera, and in eight years I've never had a problem or even a question.
