Juliusz, you know that GNU libiconv is portable to any system that
runs X applications. Btw, libiconv 1.8 has recently been released.

The real reason why iconv is not suitable for X is that iconv's
purpose is to convert text, thus it supports text encodings (sometimes
called CES). But X needs to support font encodings, such as
Adobe-Symbol, JISX0208 and the like.
