The FreeType 2 backend and the latest version of mkfontscale are
available from

  http://www.pps.jussieu.fr/~jch/software/files/

Everybody can change his mind.

The files are:

  xfree86-freetype-2.1.1.patch : imports FreeType 2.1.1 into XFree86;
  xfree86-freetype2-20020620.tar.gz : latest FreeType 2 backend;
  mkfontscale-20020618.tar.gz : latest version of mkfontscale.

Instructions:

  $ rm -rf xc/extras/freetype2 xc/lib/font/FreeType xc/programs/mkfontscale
  untar freetype-2.1.1.tar.gz under /tmp
  $ mv /tmp/freetype-2.1.1 xc/extras/freetype2
  apply xfree86-freetype-2.1.1.patch
  untar xfree86-freetype2-20020620.tar.gz
  untar mkfontscale-20020618.tar.gz
  $ make World

Version 20020620 includes the patch I've just sent to the list.
Neither the backend nor mkfontscale will build with versions of
FreeType older than 2.1.1.

For people using older versions of mkfontscale, please upgrade.
Previous versions had a minor bug that interacts badly with a bug in
FreeType 2.1.1; this version of mkfontscale should be immune.

(For anyone interested: previous versions of mkfontscale failed to
activate the right cmap. This was okay in 2.0.9, which would provide
a default cmap which turned out to be the right one in most cases, but
breaks in 2.1.1, which fails to do so.)

                                        Juliusz
