On a related note, it may be worthwhile to offer the option of aa-ing
bitmaps (embedded or otherwise).  AA improves even the best-instructed
ttfs even though only curves and diagonals are changed.  Bitmaps can
benefit from that just as much as well-instructed ttfs.

How much work would it take to support that?
