For your information, FreeType 2.1.3 has been announced. I haven't tested it yet, but it claims to implement compressed PCF fonts.
It also claims to fix the BDF bearings problem. It doesn't claim to
fix the PCF resolution problem.
If anyone has time to test it, please report.
