Hi all,

at the last meeting, it was approved that all members should know about the
following, because it affects the co-op directly.

This is just to let everyone know what the situtation is and how it
could affect the Coop. Obviously its up to everyone to decide what
they are an individual do and dont want to do.The purpose of this email
it not to try to sway people's opinions and/or actions any particular
way but rather to provide some background infomation and context
and to ensure Coop members know what is going on and then its up to
eveyone to choose for themselves what they do and do not want to do.

The Student Guild has called an annual general meeting for next
Thursday the 7th of April. At that meeting they want to abolish the old
Guild Consistution and replace it with a new one. Amoung lots of other
things, the new version of the constitution abolishes the Environment
Department and this affects or could affect the Coop as follows.

*Part of the Environment policy states that the Student Guild
supports the Food Coop (and this has taken a variety of
forms, if you would like more info or details please
feel free to ask) and removal of the Enviroment Department
would most likely imply removal of the Environment policy
or in anycase makes it very easy to abolish the Environment policy,
Lack of an Enviroment department would also mean there is no one
to develop, implement and enforce any Environment policy.

*The Environment department are also the group that orginally
started and set up the Coop in 1994. They did so in a way that
keeps the Coop as separate from the Student Guild as possible
in terms of affliation in order to minimise political
fallout and factional politics interferring with the
Coop in order to protect it while at the same time
ensuring that the Guild does provide support
for the Coop as appropriate. Ie the Coop is
not affilicated with the Guild in any official
way as such but it is supported by the Guild.
Elimination of the Environment department c
ould result in this situation changing.

The annual general meeting meeting is on Thursday the
7th of April (ie this week) in the Club Bar (upstairs i
n the uni bar) and there will be free pizza, wine, beer
soft drink etc. All current Student Guild members (ie all
current UNSW students) are eligible to vote on whether or
not the new constitution should be accepted at this meeting.
