heya guys, i know this is not exactly a food co-op issue but I need the help of as many environmentally minded people as possible! Attached/below is a letter written by my parents (that i have modified for me to send).
As you may know, a film company which was given permission to film in the World
Heritage Wilderness Area at Mt Hay has had its permission to do so revoked in
the Land and environment Court- as the approval did not comply with legislation
to protect these areas.
Bob Carr now plans to change the act to allow commercial exploitation of
wilderness areas and is rushing legislation into Parliament next week (starting
3rd May 04). Should you think that this wrong, you can express your concern by
writing to Bob Carr and Bob Debus. PLEASE PRINT OUT AND FAX/ EMAIL LETTER ASAP

Dear Mr Debus
PROTECTION OF WORLD HERITAGE WILDERNESS AREAS
I am writing to you with respect to the proposed legislation which is to be
introduced shortly to the NSW Parliament to allow commercial exploitation of
Wilderness Areas in New South Wales.
The recent successful legal action by the Blue Mountains Conservation Society
against the Minister, Department of Environment and conservation and the film
company Talons indicated that this type of activity was wholly incompatible in
a Wilderness Area.
The Carr government is renowned for its recognition of the value of protecting
remaining natural areas in this state, and we have a wonderful legacy of
National Parks and Wilderness Areas as a result. However Wilderness Areas are
in fact merely islands in an expanse of developed land changed by agriculture,
forestry and urbanisation. This makes them all the more vulnerable to unnatural
environmental effects and threatens their very existence.
The relocation of the film company Talons to an alternative location at such
short notice indicates that there is enough choice of venues for such
commercial activities without compromising Wilderness Areas.
We urge you as Minister for the Environment and also as the Parliamentary
Representative whose electorate includes the World Heritage Wilderness Area,
NOT to introduce legislation that will allow commercial exploitation of
Wilderness Areas and to leave these small islands of natural environment
unthreatened and unchanged for future generations to enjoy.
Yours sincerely
