Hi everyone,

I figured I'd send an email to ensure that everyone knows what is going to
happen with elections for management committee this session.

We are trialling a new, improved, and (most importantly!) more transparent
elections system. If it works, it's going in our Constitution.

Technical difficulties are preventing me sending you full details, but I can
give you some info now.

First, for the first time, we have a Returning Officer (me!). My job is to run
the elections - to receive nominations, check that someone is "qualified" (not
as scary as it sounds ;) ), and then to actually conduct the ballot at the
meeting. I am NOT a member of management committee, nor am I standing for any
management position.

Very soon, I will be emailing out a list of the management committee and sub-
committee jobs which are open, with job descriptions. If you are interested in
nominating yourself or someone else for one of the positions, you should email
me, or leave a note in a box which will be in the shop. I will then contact the
nominee and confirm details.

At the meeting (to be held next week, probably Wednesday 6pm), I will announce
who is nominated for each position. If, for any position, only one person is
nominated, we will check to see that everyone is happy with that person. If,
for any position, more than one person is nominated, we will send them away
from the meeting area, call them back one by one and they can tell the meeting
why they should be elected. Then they will all go away from the meeting again,
and there will be a blind vote.

Note that you will get a chance to ask the co-ordinators (for example)
questions about what they plan to do as co-ordinator, etc etc.

If a position has no nominees, I will call for new nominations at the meeting.
So even if you don't get a chance to nominate yourself before the meeting, but
you're interested, please come along.

Anyway, the more people who can come along to the meeting, the more likely we
are to be able to test the system, and the more democratic the whole thing will
be.

So I encourage you to come to this meeting, even if you don't want to be on
management committee, even if you don't intend to come to any other meetings at
all this session! AND if you are signing new members up, please encourage them
to attend the meeting also.

Hope to see you all next Wednesday!
Brenda
