Please excuse my stupidity....

I had the following in the SVG:

  <g id="overlay" opacity="0.07">
     <rect x="0" y="0" width="900" height="470" fill="url(#pattern)" 
stroke="black" stroke-width="0">
   </g>

Note lack of end tag for the <rect>

Still, the error msg threw me a little.....
