The dependency on JAXP remains, of course. It's about removing the JAR. As long as we don't want to use features from newer JAXP versions (XPath, for example), yes. However, considering the ancient Xerces/Xalan versions found in Sun JVMs, I'm hesitant to remove those. I'm thinking about moving the XML JARs into a <fop-root>/lib/endorsed directory to emphasize that special measures (-Xbootclasspath/p:) are necessary to replace existing libraries.
Another topic in this context is a centralized place for instantiating Transformers and SAXParsers/XMLReaders etc. Something for both Batik and FOP, probably.
