Why does Fop.getDefaultHandler return a DefaultHandler?

Hi,

does anyone know why the o.a.f.apps.Fop.getDefaultHandler method returns
an instance of org.xml.sax.helpers.DefaultHandler and not just an
org.xml.sax.ContentHandler? Could that be changed?
