Hi Euan, this bug is still reproduced with FOP TRUNK. as a workaround, you should use fo:table instead of fo:list.
for your 2nd question, you can directly download FOP 0.95 binaries (see [1]), but if you want to build from source, you should read first the build page [2]). If you still get errors, please post them on the list, somebody should help you. note that these 2 topics should have been posted on FOP-user list, since it is related with FOP usage rather than FOP development.
