This has already been proposed, and there is a general agreement this would be one of the better ways to proceed. Unfortunately, nobody could provide the resources to actually do this. You can certainly help here, a good start would be to create a Wiki page on http://wiki.apache.org/xmlgraphics-fop and outline a plan for a transition. J.Pietschmann
