Extended font works on 0.20.5rc2 but not 1.0DR1 lastest, any ideas why???

I have been able to use FOP 0.20.5rc2 to generate a PDF with arabic 
glyphs by following the directions for extending FOP fonts found at  
http://xml.apache.org/fop/fonts.html

I recently pulled the latest source off the 1.0DR1 branch, built the 
source but after invoking it the resulting PDF had ### marks instead of 
the arabic glyphs. I invoked the 1.0DR1 build FOP using the same 
userconfig.xml, font.ttf and font.xml (metrics) files that worked with 
the 0.20.5rc2 build.

Does anyone know what I might have done wrong?
Has anyone been able to extend the font support of the 1.0dr1 build?
If so, did you follow the same directions refed above, or some other 
method?
