Opacity in SVG graphics on PDF documents.

I know that opacity is a problem as evidenced known problem 6.   http://xml.apache.org/fop/graphics.html#svg-problems   However, does anyone know why?  I attempted to work around this issue by converting the image first to png (tried tiff and jpeg too).  The opacity is there with png, but any text is choppy, pixilated, especially when printing.
